In gardening, it often feels as if there is a pause while you wait for something to happen. Waiting for the right time to sow seeds, to see buds open, or to pick your harvest of fruit or vegetables. This week I’m waiting (and hoping) for the grey sky to clear and let a little sunlight through to the autumn leaves. They need that gleam of light to pick out their details and bring their images alive when I photograph them.
I’m waiting for the first frost of the year too… 🍂

That’s a lovely photo, with a pronounced autumnal feel. The shape of the leaf and the backlighting both contribute to its uniqueness, and the touch of frost is nice. We’re still waiting…waiting…waiting for some kind of real front to drop our temperatures. Everyone is heartily sick of temperatures ranging from 20C to 27C. This may be one of those years when we go straight from summer to winter!

Wow, summer already feels like a memory here and it has been cool for a while. It must feel odd to have such unseasonal temperatures! Probably not at all good for wildlife either…

This post reminded me of a Buddy Holly song.

LOL, I’m glad to say that I may be waiting and hoping but I’m not crying… 🙂

Ah, I know that feeling so well! We had a rare spell of sunshine this morning so I dashed up to the woods with my camera like a woman possessed. It’s such a waste of beautiful autumn colours when the weather is so grey. Fingers crossed the grey skies clear for you soon!

Sun is an opportunity not to be missed at this time of year. The forecast says we may have a little bit of sun coming up this week, so my fingers are indeed crossed! 🙂

Lots of black sogginess in my garden. A glimmer of sunshine today meant I could finally get out and do some clearing and cutting down.

We had a short-lived glimmer too, but the light faded so fast that I almost ended up gardening in the dark…perhaps not a very good idea!

Yes, once that sun goes down it soon gets dark.

This gloom is getting rather depressing. I went to East Bergholt , Place for Plants arboretum today, but it’s not the same without sun sparkling on the autumn leaves.

I’ve been at East Bergholt in spring but not in autumn – I would imagine that it really needs some sun to make the leaves shine and glow. Hopefully we’ll get some sun soon!

I hope you will get both your sunshine and your frost, Ann, so you can capture more leaves like the beautiful elder in your photograph. 🍂🍁🍂

Thank you Tanja! We have some sun now, and it looks as if the frost will soon be here – time to make sure all the tender plants are safely inside! 🙂

I am waiting for a chance to get out into my garden. My dad had to plant some grape hyacinths for me as I’m not able to at the moment. I did manage to rescue my gnome from the snow and bring him in for the winter. I poked him out with a crutch so I was able to get at him. Dormancy not only in gardens right now it seems. Hope you are soon finding things to do

It’s cold but not at all snowy here, so I’ve given the photography a rest for a little while. There’s still lots to do out there but I’m staying warm inside and trying to learn a bit more about printmaking for a change. It sounds like you’ve had an injury? If, so, take care of yourself and I hope you recover very quickly!

I tripped over a box at work and broke my foot. I also developed a nasty chest infection and pleurisy so am still off work. November’s not been the best month but December’s now here, so feeling more cheerful. The weather is a smidge warmer though probably only for this week. No gardening for me just yet.

Ow, Jill, that sounds terrible! I hope that you heal quickly and well from these – it’s a lot to deal with at once! I hope that December is much kinder to you.
