It may look slightly sinister as it lurks in the shade, but this plant isn’t carnivorous. The deep flowers are this shape to make sure that they are pollinated by insects. The insects aren’t on its menu!

When I saw this, my first thought was “Jack in the Pulpit” and that’s what it is. Our native species is Arisaema triphyllum, but I’ve never seen it marked with so much purple. This one’s a beauty.

It was the first time I’d seen this too – lurking in a shady area, so it would have been easy to walk past and miss seeing it.

That is a weird thing, but anything designed for easy pollination is good.

It’s good that you said this plant isn’t carnivorous, because it reminds me of pitcher plants that are.

They reminder me of pitcher plants too – hence my feeling that they look a little sinister.
